Von Krankenhaus – Ipotesi
Ipotesi emerges from the desire to reclaim forgotten fragments of the past and reshape them. The recording stands as documentation. Fixed in time, neither aging nor evolving. Yet the gaze observing it transforms, including that of its creator.
What occurs when confronting a past version of ourselves? What if this version first passes through another’s perspective?
So I asked saxophonist Gabriele Fava to send me old recordings and phone sketches: practice sessions, rehearsals, and unfinished compositions. From these fragments, I crafted ‘instruments’ to use in our collaboration. We then met at the studio for a free improvisation session.
Beyond this core process, I leveraged different studio spaces and microphone placements to physically displace sound in the acoustic environment. While interacting with our instruments, I manipulated our live monitoring by raising/lowering individual mic volumes, effectively moving us through space via this live mixing technique. This approach became foundational for post-production, which I treated as a purely mechanical process: no effects, only volume adjustments and cuts.
During post-production, the album’s title emerged from a question: How many versions of this project could exist? Infinite possibilities. Which iteration becomes fixed? I can only hypothesize; only present choices matter. Tomorrow’s decisions would differ. Even the track titles reflect aspirations beyond our reach: things we long to attempt but remain fundamentally unattainable.
This album was recorded in Studio Setz (Reggio Emilia, Italy) in autumn 2024 with Gabriele Fava on tenor saxophone, Mattia Gianni Dallospedale at electronics and post-production, and Alessio Cairoli as recording engineer.
